Properties of Amethyst
With an intense violet color that varies to soft lilac, Amethyst is a variety of quartz, which gives it a trigonal crystalline structure. Made up of asymmetrically arranged layers of quartz, Amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it highly valued in jewelry making. Found in Bolivia, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay and, above all, here in Brazil, where geodes up to two meters tall are not uncommon, this stone carries with it a history dating from the Neolithic period to its use as a symbol of celibacy among members of the Catholic Church.
During the Middle Ages, Amethyst was widely used in the making of talismans and magical amulets for preserving chastity and sobriety. It was believed that the crystal was synonymous with wealth, until it became widely used in rings, crowns and scepters. Christian bishops wore Amethyst in rings, as its color symbolized royalty and fidelity to Jesus Christ.
In Greek mythology, Amethyst was a nymph who became the target of the god Dionysus's fury after he became drunk. When the nymph cried out for help to the goddess Artemis, she immediately turned her into a clear crystal (quartz) to protect her from the tigers unleashed by the god of wine. Unable to do anything else, a repentant Dionysus then poured a goblet of wine over the crystal, turning it violet.
In astrology, Amethyst is associated with the month of February and is the birthstone for the sign of Pisces. It is considered the gemstone symbolizing the sixth wedding anniversary, and is also linked to Valentine's Day (it is believed that Saint Valentine wore an amethyst ring carved with a design of an angel).

Its name originates from the Greek word amethustos, meaning "not to intoxicate". An ancient Greek myth said that when a person drank from a goblet made entirely of Amethyst, they would not get drunk under any circumstances.
